Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine

A Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) has a complete medical license enabling him/her to practice medicine, surgery, deliver babies and prescribe medicines. D.O.s can specialize in Neuromusculoskeletal (Manual) Medicine receiving extra training in the art and science of human mechanics.

An Osteopathic physician’s evaluation and treatment is based on viewing the body as a whole. They look at how the integration of the body’s structure (bones, joints, discs, muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves) function with each other within the body’s system. A breakdown of the normal working patterns of the body (unique to each person) cause these structures to dysfunction and become painful.

  • An Osteopath assesses each patient’s individual normal mechanical working pattern.
  • By gentle manipulation of the bones and soft tissue structures, they work to relieve restrictions which may be impending joint mobility, blood flow, nerve function or muscular activity.
  • Through these manipulations dysfunction is reversed and pain is alleviated.

While it is easy to think of one’s health as only being affected by the maintenance of our internal organs, it’s just not that simple.

The external factors that we face in our day-to-day life have just as much of an effect on how we feel. Managing both the external and internal aspects is a priority at Discover Health, as we want our patients to enjoy long and sustainable health.
